Black Lives Matter | Definition, Goals, History, & Influence

Maddie Meyer/Getty Images News BLM activists have held large and influential protests in cities across the United States as well as internationally. A decentralized grassroots movement, Black Lives Matter is led by activists in local chapters who organize their own campaigns and programs. The chapters are affiliated with the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, a nonprofit civil rights organization that is active in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. BLM was cofounded as an online movement (using the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media) by three Black community organizers Patrisse Khan-Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi. They formed BLM after George Zimmerman, a man of German and Peruvian descent, was acquitted on charges stemming from his fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager, in Sanford, Florida, in February 2012. Dark Money Behemoth That Hosts BLM Foundation Received $16 Million in Government Grants

Washington Free Beacon Getty Images December 23, 2020 3:35 PM The dark money network that houses the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation received nearly $16 million in taxpayer-funded grants last year, financial filings reveal. The Tides Center, a California-based nonprofit incubator, reported the government grants on its 2019 tax forms. It operates by acting as a fiscal sponsor to several left-wing nonprofits, including the BLM Global Network Foundation, which has advocated for abolishing the nuclear family and defunding the police. This arrangement lets the nonprofits avoid disclosing their financial activity, and thus makes it difficult to know where the taxpayer-funded cash ultimately ends up.

The 20 phrases that defined 2020

Tim Herrera, The New York Times Published: 19 Dec 2020 08:41 PM BdST Updated: 19 Dec 2020 08:41 PM BdST This pandemic plagued year has given us scores of new words, phrases, expressions and metaphors. Some, like maskne and walktails, are just goofy little turns of phrase that let us find a drop of joy in this disastrous year. (Ade Hogue/The New York Times) Happy Blursday! Now quit doomscrolling, grab a quarantini and please keep social distancing. ); } Imagine explaining that sentence to yourself in December 2019.
