I canât stop thinking about two questions posed by the fifth episode of Disneyâs new streaming series âThe Falcon and The Winter Soldierâ: Is the world ready for a Black Captain America, and would any self-respecting Black person take up the suit and shield?
âThe Falcon and The Winter Soldierâ picks up a few months after âAvengers: Endgame,â and it follows Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, and Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan, as they navigate a world thatâs lost its Captain America to old age and as they investigate the Flag Smashers, an anti-nationalist group that wants to return the world to its pre-Blip unity. If youâre unfamiliar with the Avengers story, the Blip was the sudden reappearance of 3.5 billion people lost five years before when Thanos used the Infinity Stones to erase them from existence.

This story contains spoilers about Episode 6 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
It was never a matter of if Anthony Mackie was going to become the next Captain America. Just a matter of when.
From the moment Mackie s Sam Wilson was handed the shield by an elderly, time-traveling Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in 2019 s Avengers: Endgame, the clock had been ticking toward the moment Sam would wield the shield as the next star-spangled Avenger.
That moment is now streaming on Disney Plus in the series (or season?) finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Captain America’s shield will rise once again for the big screen with news confirming that a fourth film tracking the superhero’s adventures is now in the works.
The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news, announcing that the script is being penned by Malcolm Spellman, who serves as the showrunner on ‘The Falcon and the Winter Solder’, along with Dalan Musson, who is a writer on the Disney+ Marvel series. The Falcon and Winter Solider Image Credit: Dinsey+
While no casting announcements have been made, the series, which concluded its first season on Friday, saw [SPOILER] Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson or The Falcon pick up the shield and emerge as the new Captain America.
