House Committee Spars Over High Maternal Mortality in Black Women

email article WASHINGTON A House hearing on reducing maternal morbidity and mortality among Black mothers started off harmoniously, as would be expected, but later devolved into disagreement over root causes of the problem. Our nation is facing a maternal health crisis, said Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, at the beginning of Thursday s hearing, which was entitled, Birthing While Black: Examining America s Black Maternal Health Crisis. Across the globe, our maternal mortality rate ranks the absolute worst among similar developed nations and 55th overall. Deaths Unequally Distributed The danger of giving birth in the U.S. is not equally distributed, Maloney continued. The CDC estimates that Black women are more than three times as likely to die during or after childbirth as white women. AOC says Planned Parenthood promotes births, saves lives

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made an impassioned case arguing those who truly value life must support Planned Parenthood, noting how many babies have been born because of prenatal services offered by the organization.  The New York Democrat also said that she was a Planned Parenthood baby, as her mother relied on prenatal services offered by Planned Parenthood before her birth.  If we want to talk about Planned Parenthood let’s talk about how many lives Planned Parenthood has saved. And how many babies have been born because of the prenatal care provided by Planned Parenthood, Ocasio-Cortez said. Planned Parenthood’s annual 2019-2020 report said it provided 354,871 abortion services and 8,626 prenatal services.

As a midwife in South Florida with a practice that is 85-90% Black, it was difficult to know what to say to my clients in the wake of the murder of Ma’Khia Bryant. With International Day of the Midwife on May 5, we are reminded once again that state violence is a big factor in why Black midwives are necessary. According to HuffPost, in a White House roundtable during Black Maternal Health Week in April, Vice President Kamala Harris linked the same racial inequities that lead to police killing Black people to how Black women suffer higher rates of death in pregnancy, and childbirth.
