Shorefront awarded grant for Black history preservation

Shorefront Legacy Center was awarded a two-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Wednesday for its archives and local reparations research initiatives. “Shorefront’s two-year grant will increase engagement within the local Black communities,” a Shorefront press release read. “The grant will support Shorefront’s work in collections care, programming activities, publications, the African American Heritage Sites Program and research efforts involving local reparations.” The press release said the two-year grant will allow Shorefront to build upon 25 years of educational and outreach initiatives. Additionally, Shorefront can expand its archive collections with a focus on Haitian and Jamaican communities and invest in additional preservation and security measures.

Ooh, chile! It s almost that time again for the NAACP Image Awards! (Disclaimer: I have been a member of the NAACP for going on 3 years and was recently elected Yakima County Branch President). In my not-so-humble opinion, this award show is not getting the love and just due it deserves. It has been going on for the past 51 years but the live Instagram announcement of the 2021 nominees was overshadowed by the 2021 Golden Globe Award nominees that were released on the same day. I am here to remind the world that this award show is happening and that we can watch it locally on our TVs (if you have access to the BET channel). There is a reason this award show was established: 51 years ago, Black actors, writers, directors, literary artists, and other performers were either prohibited from attending more established aka white, award shows, or they were passed over in favor of their white counterparts. Great Barrington PD Names Five-Member Community Outreach Team Great Barrington Police Chief, Paul Storti made the following statement: This team’s emphasis is building trust, understanding, and transparency through two-way conversations so we can learn from each other, as education is our top priority. We hope this will bring a better mutual connection between our police and our community. The department intended to appoint a single officer to the position, but interest was so great among officers that four members of the department have been appointed: Officers Andres Huertas, Olivia Cobb, Kris Balestro and his comfort dog Beko, as well GBPD Executive Assistant Cara Becker.
