Black History Month at the University of Maine The University of Maine is recognizing February as Black History Month with a variety of fun, inspiring, and educational events. On Friday, the University of Maine community began its month-long recognition of Black History Month by placing Black Lives Matter flags at key points around the campus, including in the Memorial Union, at the New Balance Student Recreation Center, and the Maine Bound Adventure Center. Events are planned throughout the month, hosted by the Black Student Union, in partnership with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, and Fogler Library, among others. As someone who has a loved one that is dealing with a form of dementia and Alzheimer s, I understand the hard work that caregivers must provide to family members who are losing most of the memories and abilities to this debilitating disease. For the families involved, its a truly painful and sad experience to see someone you love slowly lose their faculties, but we all remain thankful to the many caregivers for their hard work and care. The Dallas & Northeast Texas and Fort Worth North Central Texas chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association will present “Hope for Tomorrow,” a Black/African American Alzheimer’s caregiver conference on Saturday, February 20 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm online.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is Michigan’s Chief Elections Officer. She is making it clear that she believes her job is to defend and protect democracy.  To that end, she is taking the wraps off a long list of proposals to change the state’s election process and the atmosphere surrounding them. The Secretary says, “Our job now is clear: to defend and protect democracy by ensuring that no matter how one votes, who they vote for, where they live, or what they look like, their vote will be counted.” Secretary Benson calls her plan, “Advancing the Vote, Protecting Democracy”.
