The state legislature passed a change to the state’s election law which was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis after party-line votes in the Republican-controlled legislature. Democrats opposed the measures for being part of a wave of legislation being introduced by Republicans in a host of states which they believe will make it tougher to vote.
US Republicans push ahead with attacks on voting rights
In the latest assault on the democratic rights of millions of people, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Trump acolyte, signed Senate Bill 90 into law Thursday after it passed the Republican-dominated Florida legislature earlier this week. The anti-democratic measure is one of hundreds that have been advanced by Republican-led state legislatures across the country following former President Donald Trump’s attempted coup on January 6.

There is no evidence of widespread election fraud in America’s 2020 fall elections but this hasn’t stopped states with Republican majorities from passing voting reform measures.
Some Republican state lawmakers have said voting reform laws will further secure elections, while opponents of the reforms say they will lead to voter suppression and disproportionally affect already underrepresented communities.
Print article TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a wide-ranging list of new voting restrictions into law Thursday, staging a misleading, made-for-TV ceremony meant to tout his credentials on a top priority for the Republican Party’s conservative base. At a live bill-signing event aired exclusively on Fox News, DeSantis said the new law would prevent fraud and restore confidence in Florida’s elections although the state has found no evidence of widespread fraud. The move made Florida the latest GOP-led state to enact tighter voting rules over the objections of Democratic critics who charge the law only makes it harder for people, particularly the elderly and people of color, to vote.
