Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a controversial election reform bill into law on Thursday morning, and minutes later a lawsuit was filed against state Republicans that claims the legislation violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
The voting bill adds more limits to voting in Florida similar to legislation in other states, where critics say GOP leadership are pushing an agenda connected to former President Donald Trump s widely disproven claims of election fraud. It’s the latest victory in the nationwide push by Republicans to restrict access to the polls, which party leaders say is necessary to deter fraud. The campaign has been fueled by former President Donald Trump’s false claim that his reelection was stolen from him, an assertion widely repeated across the GOP. Florida’s Republican legislators passed this law without a single Democratic vote even though they acknowledged there were no signs of fraud in the state, which Trump won handily in November.
Florida is the latest GOP-controlled state to place more restrictions on mail-in ballots in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CN) Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a controversial voting reform bill on Thursday, prompting an immediate lawsuit challenging the new regulations governing vote-by-mail eligibility and rules around ballot drop boxes.
SB 90, approved by the Republican-led House and Senate last week, follows voting reform laws adopted by a handful of other Republican-led states, including neighboring Georgia, which passed a widely denounced election law in March.
