British households could be set to save less money than they did before the pandemic over the next five years as the country embarks on a £45billion spending spree, it has been forecast. Despite savers salting away a record £143.5billion since the start of the first lockdown last March, the percentage of disposable income saved is forecast to settle at a lower level than would have been the case if there had not been a pandemic, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility. The Government s fiscal watchdog estimated last week that as much as £180billion would be stashed away by the middle of 2021, with the household saving ratio reaching around 17 per cent in the first three months of this year, a similar level to that seen between July and September 2020.
