President-elect Joe Biden s recent environmental-related Cabinet selections have the experience required to effectively handle their jobs, a contrast to the current administration and further proof of Biden s commitment on the issue.
On Thursday, Biden tapped Michael Regan, North Carolina s Department of Environmental Quality secretary, to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
Brian Buzby, who leads the North Carolina Conservation Network, applauded the decision, telling the New York Times, It signals that the Biden administration is serious about getting the E.P.A. back to its core mission to protect the environment and public health as well as ensure strong, meaningful steps are taken to advance environmental justice issues.

The former vice president is set to nominate North Carolina environmental regulator Michael S. Regan to become the first Black man to head the Environmental Protection Agency and Obama administration veteran Brenda Mallory to serve as the first Black chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted 66-34 to confirm Michael Regan as the next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Biden campaign had signaled that it wanted to clean house following appointments from the Trump administration well before the election, noting that the EPA was of particular importance since it needs to be in line with the bold energy strategy. Regan’s role as administrator is essential since he’ll have the ability to encourage the United States to reduce emissions wherever possible.
Whereas the Trump administration sought to undo Obama-era policies it deemed untenable and soften the power of highly influential independent executive agencies, Biden and company are bent on restoring those policies while strengthening some of its own. President-elect Joe Biden has tapped North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Secretary Michael Regan to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, multiple news outlets reported Thursday.
Mary Nichols, who leads the California Air Resources Board, was originally projected to be the favorite but her appointment reportedly fizzled after environmental justice groups raised concerns, calling her record on environmental racism bleak. Regan will be the first Black man to lead the EPA, if confirmed by the Senate.
Under Regan s watch at the DEQ, Duke Energy agreed to the largest coal ash cleanup in U.S. history, and environmentalists lauded his appointment to the federal agency.

President-elect Joe Biden will reportedly nominate Michael Regan to head the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Since 2017, Mr Regan has served as the secretary for the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
He would be responsible – if successful in attaining the position – for a number of key climate change policies.
The nomination is yet to be completed as the vetting is still being finalised.
