Column: Recent news masks real question

Recently, in a 7-5 vote, the North Carolina State Board of Education accepted new standards for social studies education in the state. The process of adopting new standards began before the pandemic forced changes in education, has been vetted by many consultants and state educators, and is set to take effect. Education Superintendent Catherine Truitt included a preamble to the standards which states, “The North Carolina Board of Education believes that our collective social studies standards must reflect the nation s diversity and that the successes, contributions, and struggles of multiple groups and individuals should be included.” This is a fair statement and certainly a goal of all social studies teachers wherever they are.

Friday News: Bending the Arc

Submitted by BlueNC on Fri, 01/01/2021 - 08:40 UNMARRIED LGBTQ PEOPLE CAN NOW FILE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROTECTION ORDERS: LGBTQ people in North Carolina can no longer be prevented from getting domestic violence protective orders, the N.C. Court of Appeals ruled Thursday. North Carolina had been the only state in the country to withhold emergency protections from people seeking protection from abuse by a same-sex partner, The News & Observer reported in 2019. That kind of protection is offered to couples of the opposite sex, and to married and divorced same-sex couples, but not for same-sex couples who are dating or who used to date. But that ban is unconstitutional, the appeals court ruled in a 2-1 opinion Thursday. Attorney General Josh Stein and Gov. Roy Cooper, both Democrats, had previously called the law unconstitutional and signed briefs supporting the plaintiff in this case.
