The Desert Sun has identified seven inmates released who are facing third strike convictions. The news last month about North Carolina working to vaccinate prison staff, and soon, inmates, is a welcome step in containing the pandemic that has ravaged the criminal justice system across the state. In the state, one in five prisoners and one in four prison staff have tested positive for COVID-19 since March 2020; this burden has disproportionately affected Black communities, who are more likely to comprise both the prisoner and staff population.
