Burke County added another 114 cases of COVID-19 over a two-day period, and the state reported its highest one-day number of cases at more than 8,000.
The Burke County Health Department reported 5,456 on Saturday and 5,386 cases of the virus on Friday, up from 5,342 cases on Thursday.
The Burke County COVID-19 dashboard, which lags behind the health departmentâs daily briefing, showed 1,159 active cases of the virus in the county on Friday. It also showed 23 Burke County residents currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. The county has previously reported 75 deaths due to the virus.
As of Saturday afternoon, the dashboard had not been updated from Friday.

The Burke County COVID-19 dashboard, which lags behind the health departmentâs daily briefing, showed 1,159 active cases of the virus in the county on Friday. It also showed 23 Burke County residents currently hospitalized because of COVID-19. The county has previously reported 75 deaths due to the virus.
Close contact remains the primary way the virus is being spread in the county, accounting for 60% of the cases, the dashboard shows.
A teen faces charges in an apartment complex shooting that sent a 17-year-old to the hospital on Tuesday and kept 13-year-old and 14-year-old boys in police custody overnight.
Police believe Nyqualin Chatman, 18, was at the complex to take around $300 from the still unidentified 17 year old. Investigators are trying to determine where the $300 came from and what transpired in the common area of the four buildings that make up the apartment complex.
Shelby Police kept 13- and 14-year-old boys in custody Tuesday night, but released them Wednesday morning without filing charges against them.
Chatman reportedly left the area after the shooting.

25-year-old North Carolina police officer killed attempting to apprehend alleged carjacker

CONCORD, N.C. A Concord Police officer and a suspect were killed in a shooting near Concord Mills Mall in Concord, North Carolina, late Wednesday night, authorities confirmed. A second officer was also shot and injured.
Jason Shuping, 25, has been identified as the officer shot and killed trying to apprehend an alleged carjacker.
