COVID numbers jump again in Kern County as public health announces 7 new deaths

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) â The latest COVID numbers jumped again Friday morning with the county dashboard revealing seven new deaths attributed to the coronavirus. The total number of deaths now stands at 558.
The website also tracking more than 400 patients that are being treated in one of 10 area hospitals.
There were 1,149 more positive tests pushing that grand total to more than 83,500. Nearly 51,000 of those tests are people 18 to 49.
Meantime, the county is opening a mass vaccination site at the Kern County Fairgrounds next week. On Wednesday they ll be holding a soft opening to a pre-designated group of people.
At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many hospitals, including Memorial Hospital, pitched tents outside their emergency departments to accommodate a surge in coronavirus patients.
But this week, in lieu of a tent Memorial Hospital set up a brand-new temporary building in the parking lot outside the emergency department.
Local hospitals are beginning to roll out their surge plans as COVID continues to rise in Kern County. There are 348 patients in county hospitals, a 17 percent increase from the week before, according to state data. Of those, 73 are in intensive care units, a 20 percent increase from last week. Based on county estimates, 1 in 33 residents has active cases of COVID.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â As people prepare for the Christmas holiday, The Kern County Latino COVID-19 Task Force continues to encourage Kern County residents to get their COVID-19 test at one of this weekâs free testing sites.
In addition to the free testing sites, the collaborative has launched a new mental health and wellness hotline handling a variety of topics such as virtual education classrooms, employment concerns, and general worry about the safety of oneself and the safety of our family. There will be three locations:
⢠Meadows Field International Terminal, 1401 Skyway Drive, off Airport Drive and Skyway Drive
⢠Kern Medical, 1700 Mt. Vernon Avenue, in the Flower Street parking lot
⢠Kern County Fairgrounds, 1142 S. P St. parking lot, northwest corner
Bulky waste includes items such as refrigerators, water heaters, mattresses, furniture, electronics and other large household items. All items are accepted at no charge. Salvation Army and Goodwill will also accept donations of items that can be reused.
Items that aren t accepted at the event include construction waste, demolition and remodeling waste, tires, household trash, green waste, hazardous waste and commercial waste.
