Kern reported an adjusted case rate of 7.8 per 100,000 people, and a 3.7% positivity rate as well as a 4.9% health equity rate. If over the next week the Kern County Public Health Department reports more than the state’s red tier threshold, Kern will remain in the purple tier and the countdown resets. However, if Kern County does meet red tier requirements again next week, it will officially move into the less restrictive tier on March 24.

The California Public Department of Health announced that Kern County reported an adjusted case rate of 11.8 cases per 100,000 people. In order to be eligible for the red tier, Kern must report a case rate of 7.0 cases or fewer per 100,000 people. Kern County meets two of the state’s requirements: a 4.9% positivity rate in testing over a seven-day period as well as a 7.6% health equity quartile positivity rate.

Newsom: 15,000 vaccines headed to Kern

Ridgecrest Daily Independent Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California’s Central Valley region can expect an increase in vaccine allocations, some arriving as soon as this week. Kern County will receive 78% more vaccines compared to last week, while the Central Valley will receive 58% more, Newsom announced during a trip to Arvin. Nearly 15,000 vaccinations will ship to Kern County alone, but despite this increase, Kern needs more vaccines. “As of this week, Kern County has only received enough vaccine to cover 43% of our [65+] population,” said Brynn Carrigan, Kern County Public Health Department Director, during the Kern County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday morning.
