Provincial police have charged a Manitoulin Island resident following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault.
Members of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch arrested 44-year-old Terry McCaffery from Manitowaning, according to a press release.

The Manitoulin Expositor identified McCaffery as the chief of police for the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service.
This identification was not explicitly stated in the OPP press release.

The police statistics, which were released following a Freedom of Information request filed by lawyer Eyal Besserglick, show there was a substantial increase in domestic violence complaints following the first lockdown in March 2020. The force expects the number of indictments to remain high in the first half of this year, as more are filed in cases of violence from last year.
“The increase in complaints and indictments is a direct result of the lockdowns, the fact that families were required to remain at home,” a police source said. “Spending many hours together heightens day-to-day frictions and sometimes exacerbates conflicts that preceded the pandemic.”

The Minister for Justice has said she is confident that legislation which will see sharing intimate images without consent become a crime will be enacted this year.
The Harassment, Harmful Communications, and Related Offences Bill is expected to pass through the Dáil and Seanad this week.
Minister Helen McEntee was speaking at the launch of the Rape Crisis Network s 2019 annual report.
The new law comes after intimate images of Irish women were leaked online without their consent.
