JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colorado At the close of the first day of a new semester, teachers come together in front of the Jefferson County Schools Education Center in Golden to make a statement. You know, just like our communities, there s a lot of confusion, Brooke Williams said.
Williams is president of the Jefferson County Education Association. She said teachers are frustrated with the changing schedule of when they can start getting the COVID-19 vaccine. We want to be in-person with our kids more than ever, but we want to do that safely and the vaccine just gives us more hope, Williams said.
The 5-Star business-variance program is administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and allows participating businesses to operate at one level above Boulder’s position on the statewide dial, provided that they demonstrate compliance with enhanced public health guidelines and safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
While Broomfield and Larimer have already received authorization to move ahead with 5-Star programs, Weld County has said it will not apply. The city of Greeley and the Greeley Area Chamber of Commerce, however, have applied on behalf of businesses in the city.
“Boulder County’s proposed program was drafted through a partnership between the Boulder Chamber and Longmont Economic Development Partnership, with support from the Boulder County Commissioners’ Office and Boulder County Public Health,” according to a joint news release from the chamber and LEDP.

Colorado has started scaling up a program that allows local businesses struggling under the weight of Level Red coronavirus restrictions to apply for permission to operate at a lower level of the state’s COVID-19 dial.
In a Friday news conference, Gov. Jared Polis announced the Department of Public Health and Environment had approved its first application Summit County’s to enter its so-called “5-star program.” It gives local public health officials the power to award special certifications to businesses that go all-out with safety precautions, which in turn allow them to operate with looser restrictions than others.
