âThis was Christoâs absolute wishâthat there be an auction of the works he and Jeanne-Claude had lived with,â Simon Shaw, the vice chairman of the fine arts division of Sothebyâs, explains to
AD. Now, after months in the making, the two-part auction, which is fittingly titled âUnwrapped: The Hidden World of Christo and Jeanne-Claude,â is set to kick off tomorrow in Paris.Â
For those familiar with the artists, the choice of the City of Light may come as something of a surprise, given that they lived in New York for years. âParis was sort of their spiritual home,â Shaw explains. âItâs where they met and where they married. And [Christoâs] marketplace has historically been strongest in Europe.â Shaw adds that Paris is also the location for Christoâs final, much-anticipated installation: a wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe, which is set to be unveiled this fall.
