The National Academy of Sciences elected three members of Penn State s faculty to its membership, one of the highest honors given to a scientist or engineer in the United States. Nina Jablonski, Evan Pugh University Professor of Anthropology; Jainendra K. Jain, Evan Pugh University Professor and Erwin W. Mueller Professor of Physics; and Peter Mészáros, Eberly Chair Professor, emeritus, of Astronomy and Astrophysics, have been recognized for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
As part of the celebrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of San Francisco s Golden Gate Park in 2020, a local artist group had proposed installing a lighted tribute to the late gay supervisor Harvey Milk along the top center of the Music Concourse Bandshell. It was to be in addition to the planned renovations of the performing space s lighting and sound equipment.
Also known as the Spreckles Temple of Music, the bandshell structure is at the western edge of the Music Concourse, which sits above the underground parking garage that serves visitors to the California Academy of Sciences, the de Young Museum, and Japanese Tea Garden. It was built in 1900, survived the 1906 earthquake, has been renovated over the years, and is the official home to the Golden Gate Park Band, which normally performs on Sunday s in the park during the summer months.

The California Academy of Sciences is relaunching NightLife, its in-person after-hours series for people 21 and older, the organization announced Tuesday, May 4.
On select Thursdays starting May 13, guests can stay at the San Francisco institution as late as 10 p.m. to visit exhibits including “Venom: Fangs, Stingers, and Spines” and “BigPicture” (which features the winners of a natural photography competition), take in starry (or foggy) vistas from the museum’s living roof, or meet the colorful creatures in the Philippine Coral Reef, all accompanied by special lighting, DJs and craft cocktails.
