Misidentified For Years, This Miniature Philippine Snake Marks A New Species And Genus KEY POINTS A miniature snake species from the Philippines was misidentified for years Researchers of a new study finally identified it as a new species in a new genus It is named to honor the Waray-Waray people of the Philippines Eastern Visayas The Waray Dwarf Burrowing Snake from the Samar and Leyte islands of the Philippines spends most of its life hidden underground. Apparently, a preserved specimen s true identity also was being hidden among a vast museum collection in Kansas. Researchers, however, have discovered that the small snake actually represents not just a new species, but a new genus as well.

In its native habitat, Samar and Leyte islands in the Philippines, the snake spends most of its time burrowing underground, usually surfacing only after heavy rains in much the same way earthworms tend to wash up on suburban sidewalks after a downpour. So, it may not be shocking that when examples of the Waray Dwarf Burrowing Snake were collected in 2006 and 2007, they were misidentified in the field nobody had seen them before. The specimens spent years preserved in the collections of the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, overlooked by researchers who were unaware they possessed an entire

Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium Reopens Now that some of the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Michigan, theaters can reopen. That also means that the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium, located at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, will be reopening. Beginning on Tuesday, December 22nd, the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium will be welcoming visitors on a limited capacity basis. The Planetarium will host multiple shows every week. This week will include the holiday show, Let it Snow, as well as other shows Ice Worlds , Incoming! , and Under Starlit Skies . Just in time for the holidays, the “Let it Snow” program is a festive light show. It features a variety of classic songs from greats like Chuck Berry, Burl Ives, Brenda Lee, and Frank Sinatra. There is also a stunning finale by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The music is visually enhanced with animation, special effects, and full-dome scenery.
