California Wildfires Triple Amid Drought After Record 2020 Fire Season

The flames that burned more than 1,300 acres in Los Angeles County over the weekend served as a reminder to California residents that wildfires have become a constant threat rather than a concern relegated to the officially recognized wildfire season of the late summer and fall months.
By early May, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported at least 9,392 acres burned since the start of the year more than three times the five-year average Cal Fire reported over the same time period in previous years. The number of acres burned so far this year exceeded 13,900 when combined with the number of burned acres reported by Cal Fire s partner agencies.

Kimberly DeVall, public affairs officer for Klamath National Forest sent out disappointing information on Friday. (Remember, it isn’t her fault!) As the Forest Service employees measured the snowpack around Scott Valley, they found an “extreme plunge” in the snowpack levels. Warm weather and lack of additional snowfall along with high-elevation rain storms drastically affected the snow that was up at the 5,000 to 6,000 foot levels.
DeVall said that the early-May survey showed the snowpack is at 21 percent of the historic average and the water equivalent is at 18 percent. This was found at all the survey areas from Scott Mt., to the Boulders and on Salmon Mt. behind Etna. So this is bad news.
Largest U.S. Nurses Union Slams CDC s Relaxed Mask Guidance as Dangerous

The largest union of registered nurses in the U.S. called upon the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to revise its relaxed mask guidelines for individuals who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, just two days after California broke with the federal agency and extended its own mask mandate.
National Nurses United President Jean Ross decried the CDC s updated guidance as dangerous and disappointingly not in the best interest of public health during a Wednesday news conference. We understand everyone s desire to get back to normal. Trust us we nurses would like nothing better, Ross said. But we are a profession based upon science, and the science shows this is exactly the wrong time to be relaxing our multi-pronged approach to infection control, that studies show actually work to control the virus.
