California to grant early release to violent, repeat felons

(AP Photo/Charlie Litchfield, File) California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is currently facing an upcoming recall election, issued an “emergency declaration” this week that will have a big impact on the state’s prison population. The impact in question will be a lot more prisoners – including repeat offenders and those convicted of violent crimes – getting out of prison long before they would previously have been eligible. And when I say “a lot,” I mean numbers in the tens of thousands. The state had already released huge numbers of inmates convicted of non-violent crimes in the name of combatting the pandemic. But this order takes things to the next level and Newsom isn’t even working with the legislature to make it happen. The entire process unfolded in just three weeks with almost no public notice being given. (Fox News)

Roundup: Massive toxic waste site off Los Angeles County s shores triggers huge concerns - World News

2021-05-01 22:05:59 GMT2021-05-02 06:05:59(Beijing Time) Xinhua English by Julia Pierrepont III LOS ANGELES, May 1 (Xinhua) In the latest chapter in a decades-old pollution scandal that spawned one of the worst toxic waste sites in America, ocean scientists said early this week that they had found approximately 27,000 barrels on the ocean floor in Los Angeles s coastal waters that were believed to contain DDT, the toxic pesticide banned in the United States in 1972. Prompted by widespread reports of historic toxic dumping and lingering concerns from researchers and scientists, University of California San Diego s Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers searched for a rumored undersea toxic dump site by mapping over 56 square miles (145 square kilometers) of the California seabed between Los Angeles and Catalina Island in March.

Proposed $20 billion may be approved to combat homelessness in CA

Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln met with mayors of California’s Big City Mayors coalition to talk about the homeless crisis and a new funding opportunity Thursday morning.  The conversation focused on a potential $20 billion that the state could approve to further fund housing initiatives and reduce homelessness.  “The $20 billion funding allocations to our cities would help us take bold, actionable steps to mitigate homelessness,” Lincoln said.   More than 80% of Stockton residents view homelessness as a humanitarian crisis and 60% of the homeless population are experiencing behavioral health challenges related to mental health and substance abuse disorder, Lincoln said.  If the funds are approved, “it is imperative that our cities have access to increased levels of flexible funding from the state to adequately address the crisis through more positive initiatives,” the mayor added.

California Gives Small Businesses Over $6 Billion in Pandemic Tax Relief

Federal loans buoyed some businesses during the pandemic, but California wants to further help struggling businesses with additional tax breaks. (Courthouse News photo/Nathan Solis) (CN) California will give business owners impacted by the pandemic over $6 billion in tax breaks on federal loans doled out under the Paycheck Protection Program. The tax breaks are part of a Covid-19 relief package signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom this past February. Newsom signed AB 80 on Thursday at Hanzo Sushi in the city of San Fernando, which will help businesses that weathered the economic fallout over the last year with the help from federal loans.
