SACRAMENTO – California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today a directive to end new fracking permits by 2024 and phase out oil and gas extraction by 2045, making California the first state in the nation to commit to a planned phase out of oil and gas extraction.
In response,
Friends of the Earth Senior Fossil Fuels Campaign Manager Nicole Ghio issued the following statement:
A planned phase out of fossil fuels is the only way to protect the public from deadly pollution and climate change. Friends of the Earth commends Governor Newsom for making California the first state in the nation to commit to this long overdue step. However, frontline communities cannot wait years or decades for action. It is important that the state start by immediately instituting 2,500 foot setbacks between drilling sites and the places where we live,

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) California Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday issued a sweeping ban of new fracking permits, claiming the popular oil extraction method contradicts the state’s future climate change goals and must be phased out.
Answering the calls of environmental groups that have been demanding a ban on the process formally known as hydraulic fracturing for over a decade, Newsom resorted to executive action after lawmakers rejected a proposal to ban the practice last week. The order directs regulators to stop issuing new fracking permits by 2024 and prep for the complete demise of oil extraction activities by 2045.

(Reuters) â Caitlyn Jenner, a former Olympic gold medal winner and transgender activist, on Friday added her celebrity status to a growing band of Republicans seeking to unseat California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose business-disrupting pandemic response has fueled a recall drive.
Jenner, 71, said the Democratic governorâs âover-restrictive lockdownâ has devastated small business and deprived children of in-class schooling.
âCalifornians want better and deserve better from their government,â Jenner said in a statement posted on social media.
âI am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsomâs disastrous time as governor,â she said.

California Governor Gavin Newsom today set an aspirational 2045 deadline to stop all oil extraction in the state. He also said that he plans to ban hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” for oil by 2024.
“As we move to swiftly decarbonize our transportation sector and create a healthier future for our children, I’ve made it clear I don’t see a role for fracking in that future and, similarly, believe that California needs to move beyond oil,” he said in a statement.
