TONIGHT: Hillcrest Town Council to learn about CA Citizens Redistricting Commission

HTC represents the residents of the neighborhood and meets monthly. We’re looking forward to our monthly community meeting tonight - Tuesday, May 11 - at 6:30 pm. The meeting will be held virtually. Be there to hear a special presentation from Commissioner Patricia Sinay with the California Citizens Redistricting Commission. Commissioner Sinay will share about the current redistricing plans and take questions from community members.  There will also be a short  presentation on a new affordable senior housing development proposed for Hillcrest. And, of course, we’ll have time for public comment from neighbors.  As always, we will also hear updates from representatives from our elected officials and local partner organizations. We hope you’ll be there!

Watch: What California Lost in the Census, Explained in 2 Minutes

Watch: What California Lost in the Census, Explained in 2 Minutes California’s identity, dating back to the Gold Rush, has been based on an idea: This is a place where people want to be. Prospectors. Dust bowl refugees. Immigrants. The Golden State has always lured people seeking work, play and sunshine. For most of that history, our population went up and up. And so did our representation in Congress. Now, for the first time in our 171 year history, we’re losing a congressional seat. What happened? There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives and for the last two decades, California has held 53 of them. But then the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2020 population estimate. Population growth is based on three things: birth rate, death rate and migration people coming and going. All three trends have been moving in the wrong direction in California.
