The battle over reopening California schools intensified Wednesday when Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Biden administration said campuses can safely reopen without teachers being vaccinated and unions pushed back, calling for school workers to be immunized as part of any sweeping reopening effort to return students to classrooms.
Echoing the debate, the Southern California chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics called for schools to open immediately, asserting that the harms of keeping children out of school outweigh the risks of reopening. Meanwhile, United Teachers Los Angeles accused officials of playing politics with the lives of its members, students and their families.

The pressure is on for Gavin Newsom, who is already feeling the heat from a stunted state vaccine rollout, unpopular school reopening plan and a mounting recall effort. The governor’s pick for AG is likely subject to the same diversity concerns that surrounded his decision for Kamala Harris’ Senate Seat and the Secretary of State.

NEIGHBORHOOD POLITICS-As I write this, Neighborhood Councils that have elections planned in 2021 for their communities, have already begun elections for their Board members.
This is one of the issues that I have with the Neighborhood Council system: I believe all Neighborhood Councils should be required to run their Elections through the designated City Governmental body – in the case of this year, through the Office of the City Clerk.
Neighborhood Councilmembers are considered Elected Officials within the City of Los Angeles government. Therefore, it makes sense they should be kept distant from the election process just as you would expect our Mayor, our City Attorney, our Controller, and our City Councilmembers to be distanced from their election process.
