From customers homes to utility portfolios: Inside Swell Energy s new virtual power plant reality

By: Andy Colthorpe The solar revolution has enabled households to take part in the transition away from fossil fuels. From the early adopters that wanted to contribute to the green movement more than 10 years ago, electricity from rooftop photovoltaics has become a scalable business. In the US, 3.1GW of residential solar systems were deployed in 2020, an 11% rise on the previous year, despite the pandemic causing slowdowns and significant periods when installers and sales teams weren’t able to get out to customer sites. For a long time, we’ve been writing here at Energy-Storage.news about virtual power plants (VPPs) being a logical next big step forward for distributed solar. By adding batteries, customers can get a greater degree of energy independence including some backup if the grid goes down and their utility can use the combined solar-plus-storage asset as a resource too, thanks to the bi-directional power flow between battery system and grid.

News - CA Electric Power Chief Says Serious Problems Lie Ahead

California hadn’t planned for enough capacity to be available in the net peak period to ride out a super heating event effectively. The head of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) recently gave a revealing interview, in an obscure outlet he probably figured would not travel. It is “Yale Insights” published by the Yale School of Management. Elliot Mainzer, President and CEO of CAISO is a Yalie, so he gave something back. Actually he gave a lot out, if you read the poli-speak correctly. Serious problems lie ahead. Below are some interesting insights, with translation where needed. First, Mainzer explains his job: “CAISO operates the high-voltage transmission system and the energy market for about 80% of California and a small portion of Nevada. We’re the entity that matches the real-time supply of electricity with demand and is responsible for efficiently integrating the next generation of clean energy resources into the grid. In addition to our fundamenta

SDG&E reveals sustainability projects, including hydrogen pilot projects -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Building on the sustainability strategy it released last October, San Diego Gas & Electric announced it is developing two hydrogen pilot projects, nearing completion of an additional battery storage facility and poised to break ground on another and launching a vehicle-to-grid pilot program featuring six electric school buses. “Getting to a net zero future is the moonshot challenge of our era and one that the SDG&E team fully embraces,” said SDG&E CEO Caroline Winn. “SDG&E has worked hard to align our investments with the climate objectives of local cities, the region and state and while there is a lot more work to be done, we are seeing many clean energy innovations emerge, and progress being made toward our mutual goal of a 100% clean energy future,” she said. “While we’ll continue to evolve our efforts to reflect stakeholder feedback, regulatory changes and technological breakthroughs, I believe we can get there … one project at a time.”
