In California, natural gas helps balance changes in electricity demand and solar output - Today in Energy - U S Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Note: Data are for the California region, which includes electric power markets regulated by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and other balancing authorities operating largely in California. In California wholesale electricity markets, natural gas-fired electricity generation helps to balance fluctuations in electricity demand with daily cycles in solar-powered electricity generation. Natural gas and solar are the two most prevalent sources of electricity generation in California; however, solar generation is non-dispatchable. Grid operators in the state use natural gas and, to a lesser extent, hydroelectricity and electricity imports from neighboring areas to balance changes in electricity demand. Both demand for electricity and output from natural gas-fired power plants in California are often highest in the afternoon and early evening, between 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Output from solar power will peak and then plateau by midday, rapidly declining by the ev

Transmission, local resources, market improvements key to decarbonization: CAISO and NYISO chiefs

Dive Brief: The heads of the New York and California electric grids said Wednesday that a combination of new transmission to move renewable power over long distances along with the addition of more local grid resources and market improvements, will be required to fully decarbonize the nation s power sector. But adding that new transmission in a timely manner will require a suite of policy improvements, according to Jonathan Weisgall, vice president for legislative and regulatory affairs at Berkshire Hathaway Energy. Speaking at the gridCONNEXT virtual conference, he said transmission developers need greater certainty so that projects can be brought to market quickly.

CAISO focuses on summer 2021 as final analysis of August blackouts nears completion

Dive Brief: California s energy agencies will soon release a final root cause analysis of the rolling blackouts that affected the state this past August, and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) has focused its efforts on preparing for summer 2021, according to executives. The final analysis is expected to point to three contributing factors  the climate-change induced heat storm in the Western U.S., changing supply and demand patterns, as well as market practices that exacerbated the problem, CAISO s new Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President Mark Rothleder said during a webinar organized by the Clean Coalition on Wednesday. Our efforts are currently focused on preparing for the next summer, summer 2021. While additional capacity is coming online, vulnerabilities and the need for additional capacity will exist for several years, as the system navigates the retirement of a slate of natural gas plants by 2023 and the Diablo Canyon nuclear facility by 20
