Dead heat

What if you saw someone walking past a burning house who paid no attention to it? They don’t try to put out the fire. They do nothing to help the people crying out inside. They just keep walking. You would think there was something wrong with them, wouldn’t you? Now imagine the burning house is their own, and their own friends and family are trapped inside. That seems sociopathic. And yet that person is us, and the house is humanity’s common home.
But you knew that already. Observations like that are so commonplace nowadays they ve become clichés. You may have already stopped reading this, and I don t blame you if you have. After all, we know exactly what we re doing to ourselves. We just don t know what to do about it. Or we re not willing to do what needs to be done.

An intensifying Southern Oregon wildfire is disrupting power transmission to California and the Southwest, precisely when it’s most desperately need to keep people cool in the midst of a heat wave.
The Bootleg Fire blew up to nearly 144,000 acres, racing through the Fremont-Winema National Forest’s heavy timber made more flammable by drought conditions. It forced level 2 and level 3 evacuation orders for residents northeast of Klamath Falls to “get ready” or “go now.” The fire’s rapid growth and unpredictability required fire crews to fall back to predetermined safety zones. High temperatures, dry conditions and gusty afternoon winds were expected to continue to drive the fire. And it is leading to a power transmission crisis that is likely to last for several more days, at least, as the fire burns out of control directly in the path of a major interstate transmission line.

Firefighters working in searing weather struggled to contain a Northern California wildfire that continued to grow on Sunday and forced the temporary closure of a major highway, one of several large blazes burning across the US West amid another heat wave that shattered records and strained power grids.
In Arizona, a small plane crashed on Saturday during a survey of a wildfire in rural Mohave County, killing both crew members on board. The Beech C-90 aircraft was helping perform reconnaissance over the lightning-caused Cedar Basin Fire, near the tiny community of Wikieup northwest of Phoenix, when it went down around noon.
