With federal lawmakers and the White House working on a historic infrastructure package, more than 660 progressive groups on Wednesday demanded that top Democrats in Congress “reject gas and other false climate solutions” and instead push for a total transition to renewable energy to address the global climate emergency.
“We can’t just build back better. Justice requires we build back fossil free.”

WASHINGTON More than 650 national advocacy and grassroots groups sent a letter today calling on Congress to develop a truly clean, renewable, and just energy standard for electricity as part of an evolving infrastructure package.
To meet its climate goals, the Biden administration is expected to back a national Clean Electricity Standard (CES), which some advocates argue can pass under existing budget reconciliation rules.
But existing CES proposals from prominent Democrats allow for filthy and false solutions such as fracked gas, carbon capture and storage, and factory farm biogas, warn groups including Indigenous Environmental Network, Friends of the Earth, Center for Biological Diversity, Food & Water Watch, Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, California Environmental Justice Alliance, Oil Change International, and The Democracy Collaborative.
Gavin Newsom did what no other oil-state governor has but more is needed

Last Friday, when California governor Gavin Newsom directed state regulators to begin a process of ending new permits for hydrofracturing in 2024, it seemed like reason for environmentalists to celebrate. With a recall effort threatening Newsom’s job and a pandemic still raging throughout the state, moving to restrain the state’s influential oil industry is clearly an act of political courage.
But, as the governor himself noted, fracking which in California means shoving huge amounts of water laced with sand and chemicals into oil-bearing rock formations accounts for only 2 percent of the state’s oil production. And even that may overstate just how little oil Newsom’s directive will leave in the ground.
Newsom Swears in Bonta as Attorney General of California
