Third-driest year reported in California

© Getty Images The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has marked 2021 as the third-driest water year, a period marked from October to March, on record for the Golden State, potentially setting up another deadly wildfire season after last year s record setting blazes.  The department’s annual snow survey released this month recorded precipitation levels at 50 percent the annual average for the water year.  The dry conditions can also be seen in the state’s water supply, with the department reporting that California’s major reservoirs are at just 50 percent of overall capacity.  ADVERTISEMENT At Lake Oroville, the State Water Project’s largest reservoir, water levels are currently at 53 percent of the average, DWR found.

The massive bodies of water that the state depends on for agriculture and everyday use in homes are dropping dramatically. Case in point: Lake Shasta, the state s largest water reserve, is at 53% of capacity as of April 3. On the same date last year, it was at 80% of capacity. While last winter was marked by parched conditions similar to this year, reservoirs were still full in spring 2020, as the state was coming off a run of wet rainy seasons. But at the end of a second consecutive dry winter, the reservoirs are starting to show signs of drought conditions.

Up to 100,000 acre feet is proposed to be released that belongs to the South San Joaquin and Oakdale irrigation districts that would provide a critical impulse flow from April 15 to May 15.

Latest measurement shows Sierra snowpack well below average

The fourth snow survey conducted by the Department of Water Resources at the Phillips Station snow course on Thursday showed that the snowpack is way below average. The manual survey showed 49.5 inches in snow depth and snow water equivalent, or how much water is contained in the snowpack showed 21 inches. These measurements are 83% average for that location, but that’s not the trend for the rest of California and Nevada. The electronic snow survey stations showed that overall in California the snow water equivalent is 16.5 inches, which is 59% of average. “With below average precipitation statewide, California’s reservoirs continue to show the impacts due to dry conditions,” said Sean DeGuzman, chief of DWR’s snow surveys and water supply forecasting section who conducted the survey.
