California sues Activision for sexist discrimination after 2-year investigation
In recent years, in-depth investigations have led to accusations of toxic and sexist work environments at several major game studios. Riot Games and Ubisoft are both currently tangled up in sexual harassment lawsuits, and Activision is now joining them. Following a 2-year long investigation, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing is suing Activision-Blizzard for numerous alleged violations, including sex-based pay discrimination.
California sues Activision
The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing is seeking an injunction that will force compliance with workplace protections. They are also seeking to rectify unpaid wages as well as secure pay adjustments, back pay, and lost wages and benefits for female employees.
The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing has filed a lawsuit against Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Diablo developer Activision Blizzard. The lawsuit highlights allegations of sexual harassment, unequal pay, and a general “frat boy” culture.
Reported on by Bloomberg’s Legal Reporter Maeve Allsup on July 21, 2021, the investigation by the California agency took two-years and “seeks an injunction forcing compliance with workplace protections”. Allsup notes that this would also include “unpaid wages, pay adjustments, back pay, and lost wages and benefits for female employees.”
In the office, women are subjected to “cube crawls” in which male employees drink copious amounts of alcohol as they “crawl” their way through various cubicles in the office and often engage in inappropriate behaviour toward female employees.

The suit, which was filed on Tuesday, comes after a two-year investigation which found that female employees, which accounts for about 20 percent of its workforce, have been discriminated against in terms of compensation, promotion, and termination, while those in leadership roles have fallen short in addressing and resolving instances of harassment and retaliation.

Some big news this evening for Activision-Blizzard as it has come out the company is being sued by the state of California.
