Despite some serious logistical challenges, Grass Valley will push forward with naming its largest upcoming municipal project after slain U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was born in the town.
“It’s very generous of them to consider honoring Chris,” said Jan Stevens, the emissary’s father, in a phone interview with The Union. “We’re very gracious of their consideration.”
One of those challenges is to garner California legislature approval of changing the name of a nearly $25 million planned project to add on- and off-ramps to Highway 49/20 at Dorsey Drive from “Dorsey Interchange” to something in honor of Stevens. It will require a legislative sponsor, said Public Works Director Tim Kiser.

McClure Tunnel to close for upgrades

The McClure Tunnel and several nearby ramps will temporarily close in January to facilitate upgrades to the freeway.
According to The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the work zone runs from Lincoln Blvd. to the Broadway Pedestrian bridge with closures expected to start on Jan. 4. Ramp closures associated with the project will occur mostly overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and the tunnel itself will be closed for a week from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Workers will be installing new lights, a high friction road surface, speed warning system and the county’s first queue warning system.
Big Rig Overturns, Shutting Down All Southbound 5 Freeway Lanes In Castaic
A big rig overturned Monday morning, shutting down all southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in Castaic, officials said.
UPDATE: 10:45 a.m. Three lanes are now open on the southbound 5 Freeway near Templin Highway, with the No. 4 lane closed for an estimated three hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was first reported at about 6:20 a.m. Monday on the southbound 5 Freeway south of Templin Highway, according to Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office.
“A semi-truck overturned, blocking all southbound lanes,” Greengard said.
