Six former California Highway Patrol officers face criminal charges on allegations of taking part in an overtime fraud scheme, Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta’s office announced Thursday.
Giovanni Bembi, Connie Marie Guzman, William Preciado, Edmund Zorrilla, Luis Manuel Mendoza and William Matthew Fountain were charged with a combined 97 counts of fraud and one count of grand theft,
according to a criminal complaint filed in L.A. County Superior Court. The officers, who were all sergeants assigned to the CHP’s East Lost Angeles station, are accused of collecting more than $23,000 in overtime pay for hours they didn’t work.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake rattled a wide swath of of California late Thursday afternoon, bringing reports of shaking buildings and rockslides that closed at least one highway. The earthquake centered was centered south of Lake Tahoe on the state line near Smith Valley, Nevada, according to the U.S. Geological Service.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) â An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 rattled the California-Nevada border Thursday afternoon, with people reporting feeling the shaking hundreds of miles away, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.
The earthquake struck at 3:49 p.m. in a region about 250 miles (402 kilometers) east of San Francisco and south of Lake Tahoe. Its epicenter was 4 miles (6.5 km) west-southwest of Walker, a California town of fewer than 900 residents. It was followed by dozens of aftershocks, with at least a half-dozen of magnitude 4.0 or greater, the USGS said.

Motorists are advised to use State Route 118 as an alternate route to reach their destination and to avoid the area of the full closure.
Some closures may start and end later. All closures are weather permitting and subject to change. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to check traffic conditions before leaving to their destination by visiting the Caltrans Quickmap.
The work on I-210 is part of a
$135.5 million project replacing all lanes of I-210 with new pavement from Wheatland Ave to I-5. The on and off-ramps, connectors and adjacent shoulders will also be rehabilitated. Overhead sign structures, traffic loop detectors, center median barrier, and the guardrail system will be upgraded. This project is funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
