California s DMV Investigating Tesla Over Potentially Misleading Full-Self Driving Option

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is investigating whether Tesla has misled customers by advertising its full self-driving option, a system that isn’t even close to being fully autonomous. Tesla charges customers an additional $10,000 for the ‘Full Self-Driving’ option and in fine print on its website acknowledges that the system “does not make the car autonomous” and that it requires “active supervision” from the driver. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, leading expert on automated vehicle law at the University of South Carolina, Bryant Walker Smith, said the fine print used by Tesla provides a weak defense against deceptive marketing allegations.

CEO Elon Musk has said he expects Tesla’s vehicles will be able to drive themselves more safely than humans sometime this year.

Apple expands self-driving car fleet, reduces number of test drivers - General Discussion Discussions on AppleInsider Forums

Credit: AppleInsider According to data from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Apple currently has 68 self-driving test vehicles on the road. This marks the first increase in Apple s fleet since August 2019. An Apple report with the DMV from February indicated that the company s autonomous vehicle technology as a whole seemingly improved. That report indicated that Apple s fleet doubled its road testing miles in 2020. It also had fewer situations where a human driver had to take over than the year prior. MacReports also indicates that the number of Apple autonomous test drivers has decreased to 76. In October 2020, Apple had 154 licensed drivers, meaning that the number has been slashed by nearly half.
