Analyst Finds DMV Budget Request Largely ‘Reasonable’
The Legislative Analyst’s Office is supportive of funding for the Department of Motor Vehicles in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed state budget, but recommends one key limitation.
The Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), which delivers fiscal and policy advice to the state Legislature, calls California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) allocations in the governor’s proposed budget “reasonable” but recommends a limitation for REAL ID.
Gov. Gavin Newsom delivered his proposed $227.2 billion 2021-2022 Fiscal Year budget on Jan. 8. It includes $1.4 billion for the DMV, an increase of a little more than $66.6 million, or five percent, over the current budget year. That includes $175 million for “REAL ID workload,” and $4 million for IT improvements. Among the takeaways:

When a woman visited her local department of motor vehicles (DMV), she never imagined that she would be wearing a face mask in the photo on her ID. Leslie Pilgrim, who hails from Huntington Beach in California, had waited for the DMV employee clicking her picture to let her know when it was time for her to remove the face mask.
