The Northern California Republican Assemblyman who sued Gov. Gavin Newsom over COVID-19 restrictions and who helped lead the recall movement against him announced Tuesday he s running for governor. It s official, Rep. Kevin Kiley, R-Rocklin said in a statement. I m running to replace Gavin Newsom as the governor of California.
His new campaign website, KileyForCalifornia.com, states that in the 2020 election, Kiley received more votes than any Republican in California history and that he is the only 100 percent citizen-backed California elected official, refusing all funding from the Special Interests that have spent tens of millions electing Gavin Newsom.
Over the next 70 days, Kiley said he will fight in every way I can to get our movement across the finish line. We re in it to win.

California Recall Election Date Set for September
California residents will vote Sept. 14 on whether to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose handling of the COVID-19 pandemic sparked fierce criticism from small businesses and the public.
Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis called the election July 1, days after legislation was signed by Newsom to bypass a 30-day financial review of the recall. Eliminating that stage of the process allowed the recall timeline to accelerate; the election otherwise might have been called for October or November.
Although the reasoning for an early election was not immediately known, recall supporters said they were skeptical about the date selected.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 1 (Reuters) - A Republican-led drive to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, will go to a special vote on Sept. 14, the lieutenant governor declared on Thursday, shortly after the state s top election official certified the recall petition.
The race to oust Newsom 2-1/2 years into his four-year term is shaping up to be chaotic, as several high-profile Republicans - including transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner - have said they will run to replace him.
