Grand Promenade walkabout Monday
The Imagine Carlsbad team will host a Carlsbad Village walkabout with a Q&A starting at 6 p.m. Monday focusing on the Grand Promenade and Grand Street Tunnel. Jackson Strong’s life turned upside down on Jan. 31, 2020. That was when he found out that his dad had been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He’ll always remember that morning when his then-56-year-old father took him and his sister, Katie, out to breakfast for a heart-to-heart talk.
Jackson found out that his dad had a disease, known also as ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control, typically leading to paralysis.
But the conversation did not stop there. Jackson’s dad, John Strong, said, “We got now.”
The 1,200 mile-long, underground Dakota Access Pipeline skirts the northern edge of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, carrying crude oil beneath the Missouri River with plans to expand beneath Lake Oahe. On April 9, the Biden administration announced it will not block the pipeline 一 which lacks a key federal permit and threatens tribal drinking water 一 while an environmental review is underway.
The decision to not halt the project is a paradigm of the federal government’s relationship with Native tribes, says Indigenous scholar Dina Gilio-Whitaker; it violates a treaty and the environmental rights of Native American communities.
“That’s the settler colonial system operating as it’s designed to 一 it’s not designed for justice for Native people,” she says.
