With water concerns, COVID-19 effects, and many growing seasons in full swing, there is so much happening right now in California agriculture. Here is a quick round up of a few developing stories from around the state courtesy of the California Farm Bureau Federation. Amid discussions about how much river flow needs to be dedicated to fish, an ongoing study indicates predators eat half or more of protected salmon regardless of flow levels. A fishery consulting firm working on the lower Stanislaus River says bass and other fish eat many juvenile salmon, and that the losses don’t appear connected to flows in the river. A state plan would require more water to remain in rivers and therefore unavailable for human use.

Liebig named Woman of the Year 2021

Assemblyman Ken Cooley presented a resolution honoring Lindsey Liebig as Woman of the Year 2021 at the Herald Fire Protection District fire station in Herald. Every year, the California State Legislature honors women from their districts for their various contributions for local communities. Raised in Herald and Southern Sacramento County, Liebig is the Executive Director of the Sacramento County Farm Bureau, a nonprofit organization representing farmers and ranchers in Sacramento County. “It is an honor to know Lindsey and to highlight her dedication to our local farmers and the agriculture industry,” Assemblyman Cooley said. “I am grateful Lindsey returned to her home county after college as she continues to inspire our future generations of local farmers and ranchers.”

Potential Funding to Accelerate Water Projects Monday Apr 26th, 2021 Here are a few updates from around the state, courtesy of the California Farm Bureau Federation. With more California farmers facing significant water cutbacks, public officials have responded with legislation to address the state’s recurring water shortages. A plan in the state Legislature would allocate $2 billion to accelerate a variety of water projects and programs. At the federal level, new legislation would restore canal capacity. Farm and water groups have also pressed to add water projects to a federal infrastructure package. Two concurrent efforts aim to help farmers and ranchers insure their properties in fire-prone areas. Legislation sponsored by the California Farm Bureau would authorize the state’s insurer of last resort, the California FAIR Plan, to underwrite coverage for commercial farms and ranches that can’t find it on the open market.
