Updated Dec. 19 to elaborate on whether to test school staff for Covid-19 on their return to school after a 14-day quarantine.
School districts say they now have another reason to be skittish about planning to reopen schools in the spring: new statewide emergency temporary regulations on protecting workers from exposure to Covid-19.
School officials are complaining that the new rules, which went into effect Nov. 30 after adoption by Cal/OSHA earlier in the month, are creating confusion and could significantly raise school districts’ costs. This applies particularly to Covid testing expenses, which districts and county offices of education are responsible for.

In light of extra time and efforts by employees during the pandemic, the Ojai Federation of Teachers, the California School Employees Association and the Ojai Unified School District agreed to allocate a portion of COVID-19 funding to one-time compensation for the 2020–2021school year.
Under the tentative agreement, all employees will be given an equal compensation amount, according to OUSD and OFT.

City councils and school boards have closed their meeting spaces to the public to avoid the spread of COVID-19. K8 Students Will Be Back In Class Following Winter Break; Staff Concerned About Lack of Subs
Though many of their peers in Humboldt County are taking an extra two weeks to quarantine after the holidays, Del Norte’s K8 students will return to campus on Jan. 4.
The Del Norte Unified School District Board of Trustees reached this conclusion on Thursday after hearing from parents who said it felt like their children were being punished for other people’s worries about the novel coronavirus.
But staff were more worried about their coworkers and how their jobs would be covered if they needed to self isolate or quarantine after the holidays. Paige Thompson, lead negotiator for the Del Norte Teachers Association, said she was absent for two days before the Thanksgiving break and there was no one to sub for her.
