Thank you Paul Sisson and Jonathan Wosen for your article “First Day of Mega Vaccine Clinic Delivers Thousands of Doses” (Jan 11). As a graduate nursing student, I strongly urge San Diego county officials and the UC San Diego team running these vaccination centers to consider adding nursing students to their team.
The Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) has reduced the required amount of in person clinical hours in response to the current surges hospitals are facing. Volunteering at these sites would provide nursing students with valuable patient care experiences in the public health sector.
As the state of California moves forward with the vaccination rollout, the need for volunteers to staff these sites will rise tremendously. Adding local nursing students to the volunteer team will help staff this mass effort and help the county reach their goal of administering 5,000 vaccinations daily.
