In a blow to local police reform efforts, a state administrative board on Wednesday shot down key parts of Measure P, passed by nearly two-thirds of voters in November.

The principal and three other employees at a popular southeast San Diego charter school are likely to stay now that the San Diego Unified School Board has voted unanimously to let them keep their benefits.
The vote came Tuesday, after lobbying by leaders, parents and other supporters of the school, Gompers Preparatory Academy. Some supporters had feared the four founding employees would leave Gompers if they were to lose their benefits.
But critics say those benefits the founding employees get from San Diego Unified are more generous than what Gompers gives its employees, and that Gompers should improve benefits for all of its employees.
Ordinarily, a newly-formed union would start by negotiating a contract that outlines working conditions. But with the pandemic surging, the first priority for Child Care Providers United is emergency relief for providers. Under normal circumstances . at this stage, we d be having discussions around language to start creating a skeleton of a contract, said union Chair Max Arias. But we re in COVID-19 times. We re in the middle of providers closing at an alarming rate.
Between March and November, 2,030 licensed child care homes in California permanently closed 4,400 temporarily shut their doors.
The union s members care for children through California s subsidy programs for low-income families. Since the pandemic broke out, that care has been extended to some essential workers.
