Padilla Picked to Serve as California’s First Latino Senator Bloomberg 12/22/2020 Jeffrey Taylor
(Bloomberg) California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will replace Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in the U.S. Senate, becoming the first Latino in the western state to serve in the chamber.
Padilla, a former Los Angeles city councilman and state senator, will also be the first Southern Californian to join the Senate in almost three decades. His pick by Governor Gavin Newsom followed intense jockeying by the state’s top Democrats over who would fill the role.
“Through his tenacity, integrity, smarts and grit, California is gaining a tested fighter in their corner who will be a fierce ally in D.C., lifting up our state’s values and making sure we secure the critical resources to emerge stronger from this pandemic,” Newsom said in a statement Tuesday.

Four years ago, just prior to the November election, I wrote an article titled “Hillary Should Have a ‘Catholic Problem. ” I started by citing numerous articles in the national press that proclaimed Donald Trump was having difficulty winning over Catholics a key voting bloc in any candidate’s run for the presidency. In fact, according to Pew Research Center polls, Trump ended up taking 52 percent of the Catholic vote in 2016 to Hillary Clinton’s 45 percent.
At this writing, we are still awaiting the final steps in the process of confirming the winner of the 2020 presidential election, but some voter data is already available. According to a poll of more than 110,000 voters conducted for the Associated Press, American Catholics were more evenly split this year between support for President Donald Trump (50 percent) and Democratic challenger Joe Biden (49 percent) who, unlike Clinton, is Catholic.
SACRAMENTO, Calif.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom selected Secretary of State Alex Padilla on Tuesday to be a U.S. senator, a pick that sends a Latino to the Senate for the first time in the state’s history.
Padilla called it a “tremendous point of pride” to be the state’s first Latino senator and reflected on the hard work of his parents, who came to the United States from Mexico and worked as a short-order cook and a housekeeper.
“There’s millions of other families that are equally contributing in powerful ways in each community throughout the state and throughout the nation,” he said in an interview. “These are important perspectives to bring to policymaking and problem solving.”
