Sign Up The procurement process for a new ferry which will serve Islay – estimated to cost £50 million – has begun, Transport Scotland has announced. The first stage will assess if interested shipyards meet the criteria to take the project on, before an invitation to tender is issued later this year. In the past year, the procurement process for ferries has come under scrutiny following issues with two vessels from the publicly-owned Ferguson Marine shipyard in Inverclyde.

The first stage of the tender process will assess if interested shipyards meet the technical and financial criteria to take on the project. The invitation to tender is expected to be issues later this summer with a view of awarding the £50 million contract in March 2022.

Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL), finished the main job in December last year which included repairs on the main pier approach way, which was damaged repeatedly by storms. Work was also carried out to return the old pierhead back to operational use for third party vessels.
