Viewpoint: Oscar nod for Time could bring international attention Louisiana s prison system

Sibil Fox Richardson in a scene from “Time.” (Amazon Studios) Sibil Fox and Rob Richardson (also known as Fox and Rob Rich) are among a handful of New Orleanians who have a personal stake in Sunday night’s 2021 Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Awards . The poignant film about their two-decade-long effort to find justice in what is often considered a racially charged and overly harsh prison-industrial complex, “Time,” is a favorite for Best Documentary Feature.  Also up for Oscar consideration is “One Night in Miami,” which was shot in New Orleans and LaPlace, as well as musical works by New Orleans natives and NOCCA graduates Terence Blanchard and Jon Batiste, who have been nominated in the Best Score category. LSU grad Steven Soderbergh is one of the event’s producers. “Time” is only the second documentary post-Katrina New Orleans to be nominated for an Oscar.

Why Sunday s 2021 Academy Awards Will Be Unlike Any in History | BU Today

Film CFA Dean Harvey Young: what to expect and who should win the big honors April 22, 2021 Twitter Facebook Hollywood’s biggest night of the year is here. Finally. After a two-month pandemic-caused postponement, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony is this Sunday, April 25, at 8 pm. And happily, it will be in person, not virtual (unlike February’s disastrous Hollywood Foreign Press Golden Globes show). But this year’s show promises to be unlike any other in history. For starters, it will broadcast from two locations, not one, to accommodate for COVID-19 safety protocols: there will be an intimate ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station, along with live elements from the Dolby Theatre, the affair’s traditional setting. And forget bleachers packed with screaming fans. Only presenters, nominees, and their guests will be on hand.

I would love to be the one to make the Indian Oscar-winning film: Guneet Monga

I would love to be the one to make the Indian Oscar-winning film: Guneet Monga Suhani Singh © Provided by India Today Producer Guneet Monga is jubilant at receiving one of France s top honours the Chevalier dans l Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, or Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. The honour, she says, meant a lot given it was coming from a country which she refers to as the mecca of world cinema. I am inspired by how the French cinema business operates and how much it prioritises the fact that the country and its art and culture will move ahead if storytellers are funded. This attitude is in stark contrast to India where Monga feels money is given to filmmakers not always for art s sake but more for commerce s. Here we talk more about numbers than the film themselves, she adds.
