KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 Amid another lockdown, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) today urged the government to heed the advice of real infectious diseases experts to better combat the pandemic. MMA president Prof Datuk Dr Subramaniam Muniandy said the association agrees with former Universiti Malaya medical faculty dean and infectious diseases expert Prof Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman who said the government’s ongoing public sanitisation methods were a waste of precious public funds and resources.

The Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (AMM) said the government must prioritise Covid-19 interventions that will help reduce the number of cases as well as to protect hospitals and intensive care facilities during the two-week lockdown to allow our healthcare professionals a breather and respite . The Academy highlighted the United States Centre for Diseases Control (CDC) which has debunked the public sanitisation approach. It said in a statement on Thursday (June 3) that the CDC notes spraying cleaning products or disinfectants in outdoor areas - such as on sidewalks, roads or groundcover - is not necessary, effective or recommended.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 The political secretary to Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin today criticised infectious disease expert and World Health Organisation Science Council panel Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman for questioning the ministry’s public sanitisation initiative and calling it a “waste of resources”. Nor Hizwan Ahmad said the public sanitisation initiative was an effort that was approved by the government as part of the effort to minimise the risks of Covid-19 infections in public places.
