Oscars 2022: who might triumph at next year’s ceremony?
After a year of delays, the next 12 months offers a wealth of big, awards-aiming movies from intimate dramas to historical epics

It’s not often that the word unusual gets attached to the Oscars, one of the most staid and predictable nights of the year, as sober as the Golden Globes is drunk. But after an unusual year, the awards season followed suit, extended by two months, films dropping in and out of the race and some that might otherwise have been ignored instead taking centre stage.

Record number of women nominated for Oscars this year

Seventy women received a total 76 nominations, according to the Academy Awards, a record for a given year.
Two women, Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao, were nominated in the directing category in the same year for the first time.
Zhao is the first woman of color to be nominated in the category. Mank, Netflix s black and white drama about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz s development of the screenplay for the legendary film Citizen Kane, led among the nominated films with 10 nods.

It s finally Oscars day!
Despite most award shows undergoing lacklustre Covid-19 themed makeovers over the past 12 months, it s a case of the show must go on for the illustrious Academy Awards in Hollywood today.
In addition to the traditional Dolby Theatre venue, celebrities have hit the red carpet at the Union Station in Los Angeles, as well as several other international locations.
A few key fashion themes have emerged so far: cutouts in the midriff zone (why do all-day Pilates if you can t show it off, right?); eye-catching suits (get it, boys), and bold colours.

Actress Ashley Judd has shared an update on her recovery after she shattered her leg in four places during a trip through the forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The star suffered the terrifying injury back in February and had to undergo surgery to save her leg, as her mother Naomi and sister Wynonna helped her recuperate. And on Saturday, she took to Instagram to update fans on her health.
