This month, Liberty Regional received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The CAP Accreditation Program is designed to foster continuous improvement in practices and protocols of laboratories throughout the United States. The CAP assists hospitals in managing changes in laboratory medicine, technology and regulations. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has given the CAP authority to inspect laboratories around the country in lieu of a CMS inspection. Discipline-specific checklists are utilized in this inspection process that incorporate the latest best practices and have been developed from input by over 500 pathologists. Curriculum
Students enrolled in the program spend approximately eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, in clinical and didactic instruction in all areas of the RCLA clinical laboratory. Students are additionally assigned outside rotations to expose them to a variety of equipment and/or procedures not performed at RCLA. The following affiliates are used for these rotations:
Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas – teaching hospital with 211 beds in operation, the region’s only Level 1 trauma hospital, provides a wide variety of services.
Clinical Pathology Laboratories – large reference laboratory offering services to Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas. Employees over 1850 people at the 100,000 square foot main laboratory facility in Austin.
