UW-Milwaukee to hold virtual commencement on May 16 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will award more than 3,400 degrees in a virtual ceremony on Sunday, May 16. The university will present 2,377 bachelor’s degrees, 731 master’s degrees, 143 doctoral degrees, 36 flexible option degrees and 135 associate degrees. The oldest degree bachelor’s degree recipient is 73-years-old, and the youngest is 19.  Officials say Student Association President Emma Mae Weber, who is graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Letters & Science, will be the student speaker. Officials also say this years commencement speaker will be Darian Dixon, a UWM alum who plays a key role on NASA’s $3 billion Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February. 

AS Campus Election Results Show Low Voter Turnouts, But High Hopes

Carolyn French National Beat Reporter Voting for UCSB’s Associated Student (AS) elections concluded on Thursday, April 22, and the results are in: Five executive positions and 26 legislative positions were filled. Additionally, a list of 33 reaffirmations and five new financial measures were voted on with a 5,122 undergraduate student turnout for the online election. Undergraduate students showed a 24.16 percent voter turnout while graduate students showed a 24.78 percent turnout, surpassing the 20 percent voter threshold needed to validate the results. The undergraduate turnout showed a 4.68 percent drop from 2019’s election, marking it as the lowest voter turnout in the past six years.  Storke Party member Avital Rutenburg, a newly-elected collegiate senator for the College of Letters & Science, said that voting declines in the past two years have been caused by off-campus learning due to Coronavirus.

Questions sought for Division of the Arts director finalists

Questions sought for Division of the Arts director finalists Have something to ask finalists for the next director of the Division of the Arts? Suggested questions can be submitted through April 19 to Carole Kolb at carole.kolb@wisc.edu. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, presentations by finalists from the internal search will be prerecorded and include responses to a set of questions asked by Soyeon Shim, search committee chair and dean of the School of Human Ecology. Information on the finalists is available on the Director of the Division of the Arts search site. Presentations will be posted by May 6, after all the finalists have been interviewed.

Four faculty receive 2021 Hilldale Awards MADISON – Each year, the Secretary of the Faculty recognizes four professors from the University of Wisconsin–Madison for distinguished contributions to research, teaching and service. The Hilldale Awards go to one faculty member each from the arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences and biological sciences, selected from nominations by department chairs. The winners were recognized at the April 5 Faculty Senate meeting and are awarded $7,500. This year’s Hilldale Award winners are: Susan Ellis Weismer , Michael Fiore, Sabine Gross and Robert Mathieu. Susan Ellis Weismer Susan Ellis Weismer is an expert on language learning disorders in children. She has contributed new insights into three major language-associated disorders: Autism Spectrum Disorder, developmental language disorder, and children who are late to talk. Her work has uncovered previously hidden patterns of learning in children living with these disorder
