Updated Mar 11, 2021;
Donald William Yauchzy, of Camillus, died December 5, 2020.
Born in Jamestown, he moved to North Syracuse with his family at the age of six and graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1971 and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1975, according to his obituary.
A downturn in the national economy closed the market in his chosen field, but forest biology remained his life’s interest. Don was an informal teacher and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He was an avid reader and he encouraged others of all ages to read as well.
The UK s largest citizen science project of its kind looking at plastic pollution is underway at Bangor University. Water samples from all over the country have arrived at the university, to see how many microplastic fragments they contain. The water, from rivers and lakes, have been collected by an army of volunteer outdoor swimmers and transported in. wine bottles. Once at the university the water-filled wine bottles are carefully analysed by Dr Christian Dunn and a team of research students for the tiny pieces of plastic floating in them. We wanted to look at as many different inland waterways as possible and find out how big a problem microplastic pollution is in all of them, said Dr Dunn.
