The College of Psychiatrists of Ireland has called for an urgent ban on gambling advertising in sports next year and said tackling gambling addiction through laws and education was needed now more than ever .

AN OUTRIGHT BAN on gambling advertisements in sports and dedicated treatment pathways are needed to tackle the “hidden epidemic of gambling addiction in Ireland”.
That’s according to the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland who today launched a position paper on gambling disorder in Ireland for what is described as a “public health crisis”.

Urgent assessment of acute inpatient psychiatric bed numbers required
Access and continuity of mental healthcare services is under serious threat due to ongoing resourcing and integration issues, the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) has told the Oireachtas Sub-Committee on Mental Health this morning (December 17). Prof Matthew Sadlier, IMO Consultant Committee member, focused on three areas in addressing the meeting: issues of access to mental health care stemming from deficits in manpower and psychiatric inpatient bed capacity; issues with the governance model for mental health services, and the need to adequately integrate mental healthcare into the wider acute healthcare system.
