Irish Labour Party introduces bill to ban gambling advertising 18th February 2021 | By Conor Mulheir Ireland’s Labour Party has published draft legislation to ban all advertising of gambling in the jurisdiction. If enacted, the Gambling (Prohibition of Advertising) Bill 2021 would prohibit all forms of gambling advertising except sponsorship. The party said the bill would divorce the gambling industry from the everyday enjoyment of sports, politics and entertainment. While Labour is in opposition, Minister for Public Health and Fine Gael TD Frankie Feighan has already said that he would support “the gist” of the bill, but said would need to read it before determining if he would back the bill itself.

However, the party stopped short of calling for an immediate ban on sports sponsorship, despite party sports spokesman Senator Mark Wall saying there was a “normalisation of gambling and sport” that is “being interlinked by gambling companies”. Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, the party’s spokesperson on enterprise and trade, said the party had considered including a ban on sports sponsorship, “but that’s a longer conversation and a more complex conversation and would have far-reaching impacts if there wasn’t replacement funding”.
